Ballack on his lucky 13

Michael Ballack, midway through his first week training with Chelsea, has

told the tale of discovering his squad number for next season. Ballack had

previously made the number 13 his own for his national side and former

club Bayern Munich.

“Initially I wanted the 13 but it was already taken and I had accepted to

take the 19,” says the new signing. “But then two days ago the coach

reason.”

Germany's international captain has also discounted the idea that he

revels in being top dog in any team in which he plays.

“As far as I know I was criticised for not being a leader at Bayern,” he

reckons. “In teams you always look for a leader and I was criticised for

not always being on top of things, controlling things, but I am absolutely

open-minded to not being a leader.”
